UMPPs on track, will be completed by 2015: Rel Power

Reliance Power targets to increase its capacity to 5,000 megawatts by 2012, its chief executive officer JP Chalasani told CNBC-TV18.
Speaking about the ultra mega power projects (UMPPs), Chalasani said that the Sasan and Krishnapatnam projects are on track and will be completed by 2015. “We have enough equity funding available.”Confident that the Government of India (GoI) will allot 28 mmscmd of gas, he said that the company will add few other gas-based projects. “We have sites for adding 20,000 megawatts gas-based capacity.” For this he said the company has tied up all its coal feedstock needs.
Below is a verbatim transcript of his interview with CNBC-TV18’s Shereen Bhan. Also watch the accompanying video.
Q: Big plans have been outlined by Anil Ambani and by yourself for Reliance Power. You are talking about going from the current 600 megawatts growing to eight times that number to over 5,000 megawatts in the next 24 months. To even better that, you are talking about 600 MW to 25,000 MW, that’s a growth of 40 times by 2015. The question that everybody wants answers to at this point in time is, are these targets achievable and are they realistic, given the fact that since 2008 you've only been able to commission 600 MW?
A: I think one has to look at the schedule for these power projects. Take an example of Rosa Power Project. This has commenced construction in June ’07 and by December ’09, in less than two-and-a-half years, it has become operational. The entire capacity got commissioned in Q1 of 2010. The first one, has been done ahead of schedule, but that’s 600 MW on this basis.
Similarly, for whatever we said yesterday 5,000 MW by 2012 and 25,000 MW by 2015, there is a clear schedule. In fact the projects that are internally targeted to be commissioned are higher capacity than what is put there, even if there are some slippages, we expect to meet these targets.
